Construction of a contemporary new Gatehuose, gates and associated external works.

We were comissioned to construct a new Gatehouse for Komatsu to coincide with their 30 year anniversary celebrations at Birtley in County Durham.

The building was constructed in shot-blasted pewter blocks with render detailing and a stark curtain wall facade. Internally, the finished concrete floor is heated via an underfloor heating system linked to an air source heat pump, solid oak detailing on skirtings, frames and the curved reception counter contrast with the exposed steel frame and roof liner.

The new gates have been designed to enhance security and also allow the largest of Komatsu vehicles to enter and exit the site.

The project presented a number of challenges to overcome relating to unidentified underground services, design changes, keeping the existing access routes open throughout the duration of the project and a fixed completion date.

The end result is a fantastic building that embraces modern design and makes use of environmentally-friendly construction techniques.
