Yarm Music School and Boathouse, The Friarage was awarded the title of Best Educational Building at the Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards – one of the most recognised events on the building industry’s calendar.

A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design.

The new Music School at Yarm School, an independent, co-educational day school is the fifth phase of Associated Architects redevelopment masterplan. The School’s aspiration was to relocate the music department from its existing single storey building into a bespoke music school to support their ambitious curriculum.

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: “Congratulations to all involved in this complex project. “Our building excellence awards are an opportunity for the industry to celebrate good practice. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings. Our awards are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry.”

Peter Wharton, Managing Director at Wharton Construction said; “Whilst the new music school at Yarm School is a relatively small project, the complexities involved in its design and construction belied its size. The School’s delight in the completed building is testament to the expertise and enthusiasm brought to the project by the design team and Wharton Construction.”

The Grand Final of the LABC Building Excellence Awards took place on Monday 28 November 2016 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London and was hosted by TV presenter Nick Knowles, best known for his work on DIY SOS.
